The accord with McCartney, 64, one of two surviving members of the Beatles, covers his catalog of 25 solo albums. EMI, the world's third-largest music label, also distributes music by the Beatles and said last month that it can be "working on" making the group's songs legally available for download for the first time.
In an interview with Billboard magazine published this month, McCartney said a deal to permit sales of Beatles song downloads is "virtually settled."
Speculation about the Beatles' music coming to iTunes increased after Apple Corps, owned by McCartney, Ringo Starr, John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono and the estate of George Harrison, ended a long-running legal dispute with Apple Inc. over use of the Apple name in February.
